Teen Fatally Stabbed Near Home in Queens, Two Suspects Arrested
A 17-year-old boy was fatally stabbed just steps from his Queens home on Friday afternoon, and police have arrested two suspects in connection with the killing.
According to the New York Police Department, Josue Argudo was attacked in the area of 76th Street and 86th Avenue in Woodhaven around 3:30 p.m. on January 9. He was later pronounced dead from a stab wound to the neck.
Neighbors were alerted to the incident by the sound of disturbing screams.
"I heard somebody scream and I came outside looked down the street," one neighbor told NBC New York. "People scream, they joke. No, this was different."
Surveillance video obtained by authorities and reviewed by residents shows the moments leading up to the violent encounter. The footage captures Argudo being chased by someone dressed in all black with their face covered. The attacker appears to hit him with what looks like headphones. The stabbing itself occurred off camera.
Another resident described what he saw after the brief chase played out.
"I just saw two individuals. I didn’t see the motion of the incident. They were fighting, they separated at some point in the video," the neighbor said. "The victim just walked away, and he sat down across from neighbors' house," he continued. "Next thing you know, they showed him slumped over."
Images from the NYPD show two individuals they were seeking in connection with the stabbing before the arrests were made.
By the weekend, police had taken two suspects into custody. A 17-year-old was apprehended on Saturday, and an 18-year-old turned himself in to police on Sunday. Authorities identified the second suspect as Derek Trejo of Queens. Both are expected to face murder charges.
A neighbor who arrived on the scene shortly after the attack recounted seeing the aftermath.
"I saw a young man -- he was on the ground, he wasn’t moving. He had a stab wound to his neck, a pretty bad one."
Several witnesses attempted to help the teenager by offering life-saving aid before emergency responders arrived. Despite their efforts, Argudo succumbed to his injuries.
The teenager was wearing a backpack in the surveillance footage, and some neighbors believe he may have been walking home from a nearby school at the time of the attack.
"It was heart wrenching, it was sad," said one neighbor. "I wanted to help."
The violence has left residents of the typically quiet area shaken.
"It brought tears to my eyes. I felt bad," said another man who saw the footage. "Who's telling a young kid to stab another kid with a knife in the middle of the day?"
The investigation remains ongoing as the community grapples with the loss of a young life so close to home.
